Putting Prayer First

Draw near to the Father in prayer so He can give you the strength you need.

Originally preached on March 1, 2015

Do we experience weakness in our lives because we aren't prioritizing time to pray and listen to God? Dr. Stanley invites listeners to set aside a daily quiet time to talk with Him. Draw near to the Father in prayer so He can give you the strength you need.

Sermon Outline

A quick prayer in the car, a hurried thought before sleep—sometimes that’s all we can manage. But making time for daily, unrushed prayer changes everything about our walk with God. This week, Dr. Stanley encourages us to reprioritize prayer.

Key Passage: Mark 1:35-37

Supporting Passages: Psalm 37:4; Psalm 119:165; Isaiah 55:3; Matthew 7:7; Mark 11:20-24; James 4:2

Where does prayer fit into your daily schedule? How much time do you set aside just for you and God to talk?

►“Give God time and give Him a place where you can meet every day—and watch what happens in your life.”

Putting prayer first:

  • Jesus often made time to pray in a secluded place (Mark 1:35-37).

  • God deserves undisturbed time alone with us.

  • Prayer sets the direction for the day.

  • When we neglect prayer, we miss out on the strength, clarity, and direction God offers.

Prayer must be empowered by faith:

  • We must believe God is committed to answering our prayers according to His wisdom, love, and timing (Mark 11:22-24).

  • Many people don’t have because they don’t ask (James 4:2).

  • God doesn’t answer prayers based on our merit. His gifts and answers flow from His promises, love, and goodness.

Prayer flows from a relationship with God:

  • God delights to give us the desires of our heart when we delight in Him (Ps. 37:4).

  • Our prayers are most effective when they flow from an ongoing relationship with God instead of being something we do just in times of need.

  • God “sifts” our prayers in perfect wisdom, giving us what we need rather than everything we want.

►“The Father needs private time with His children—not because of what we say to Him, but because of what He needs to say to us.”

Prayer is strengthened by Scripture:

  • God’s Word helps focus our prayers and guard against spiritual distraction from the enemy.

  • The Bible offers language, promises, and perspective that guide our prayers.

Establish a rhythm for prayer:

  • Jesus made time to meet with the Father daily (Mark 1:35).

  • Setting aside a specific time and location helps us stay faithful.

The results of praying in faith:

  • The greatest obstacles can be overcome when we have faith God will work on our behalf (11:23).

  • Faith enables us to accomplish what God intends, no matter how impossible it might seem.

  • God can move heaven and earth to answer our prayers (Matt. 7:7).

  • God will reveal His will and plan for our life if we diligently seek Him.

After Watching

  • Dr. Stanley said, “Give God time and give Him a place.” What could that look like practically for you? Name the biggest obstacle that keeps you from regular prayer, and ask God for help addressing it.

  • Think of one situation troubling you right now. Instead of rushing to fix it, spend time talking with God about it. You might pray: Lord, I trust Your goodness even when I don’t understand. Help me with _____________________. Show me Your will and give me faith to follow it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
