Spotlight: Beyond Survival

After a childhood marked by loss and grief, Rose found healing in the flourishing of others.

Anticipation is in the air at St. Mary’s Junior School in Kakiri, Uganda. Students are at their desks but can barely sit still. When Rose Price arrives, a wave of light blue school uniforms rises in unison.

Having just arrived from the U.S., Price greets the children, giving hugs and hearing stories. But she quickly spots one little boy, and they rush toward each other. He thanks her for making it possible to attend St. Mary’s after the loss of his parents. She relates—on a personal level—to the sorrow in his eyes.

Growing up during the HIV epidemic in Uganda, Price lost both her parents to the disease. She was barely a teenager when faced with the responsibility of raising her five younger siblings and four cousins, with only her grandmother to help.

Price remembers the loss all around her and the collective despair of the community. But she also recalls that in her darkest moments, Dr. Stanley and In Touch Ministries encouraged her to trust God and lean on His wisdom and comfort. And the devotional has continually reminded her to look for ways to be His hands and feet. Inspired to act, Price started an organization in 2020 and today leads it with two of her siblings—Second Chance Children’s Ministry provides critical resources and educational opportunities for orphans and unhoused youth. Without the looming worry of survival, children are becoming equipped to pull their families out of the cycle of poverty.

Price is overwhelmed at how God is using her pain to create a vibrant, hopeful future for those who have endured tragedies. It strengthens her faith to see her own small part in His redemptive work.
